The first is to store faux fur. A few things to avoid when storing it, whether it's attached to clothing or not:
It is very important to store fur in a dry place and away from moisture. Faux fur can get wet since it's not real and it's usually made of synthetic fibers, but the moisture can still make it curl and not look good!
Packaging faux fur garments in something like a garment bag or container is ideal. If it's wrapped too tightly between other clothing, it will flatten out and you want the fur to retain its volume and appearance! So even if you can't get a container or garment bag for it, make sure the fur has room to breathe!
Finally, do not store your faux fur in a well-lit or sunny location. Excessive exposure to sunlight can cause discoloration of any fabric and can also damage fabric fibers. So make sure to keep it safely tucked away in the dark until you're ready to wear it again!
Faux Fur Care and Cleaning
We know there is a long list of important maintenance details here, but they are all necessary! There are three parts to cleaning faux fur: weekly care, machine wash, and spot wash.
weekly care
When it comes to weekly care, there isn't much to do as long as you follow the storage rules, but you should stick to weekly brushing, especially if you wear clothes a lot.
Using a soft-bristled brush, lightly brush with textured bristles. Brushing your faux fur will help remove dirt and debris buildup from the surface and remove and prevent fiber matting. This keeps it looking great and requires no cleaning! You should also smooth the fur with your hands, making sure it lies naturally after brushing. You can do this on an as-needed basis, or once a week is fine too!
washing and cleaning
In contrast to real fur, faux fur fabrics, and garments are washable, but you still shouldn't do it if you don't have to. With real fur, both water and heat can damage the product, but faux fur is made from synthetic fibers, so water won't damage it, but heat can still. Avoid applying heat to your fur (one exception is steaming, but we'll get to that later).
Machine wash
Faux fur is safe to wash in the washing machine. Before you toss your clothes in the washer, however, there are a few changes you need to make:
Turn your clothes inside out! This helps reduce friction and agitation of fur fabrics and helps them last longer.
Wash the garment in cool or cold water with mild detergent. Remember, we want to remove as much heat as possible from the process. This also helps prevent faux fur from fluffing. Using a mild detergent will keep the fibers from matting.
That also means no dryer sheets! period. Don't even think about it. If you dryer-dry your faux fur, even on low heat, you'll regret it. The result is always bad. Lots of clumps and pads. No amount of brushing can remove them.
Having said that, air drying is a must! Hang clothes in a dry, warm place to dry safely.
So in short, when washing faux fur/garments, turn the garment inside out, machine washes in cold water with mild detergent, and air dry.
